This is to the few, The ones on random days who walk up and tell me i'm beautiful for absolutely no reason at all. I guess i don't hear it very often, because i can tell you most of the times it has happened, who said it, and what i was doing at the time. It's not actually something many people say, at least not to me, so today as i am alone and feeling down about myself... I want to remember the ones who have said it, and try to look in the mirror and see what they see and not some crazy number on a scale.
The most resent is the one that comes first to mind. I was standing in the kitchen, cooking at usual, my hair in a mess and cornstarch smudged across my cheek. My mother, who was standing in the living room stops moving for several seconds and just stares at me. When i meet her eyes she starts moving again, smiles and tells me, "i was just thinking how beautiful you are."
Another time puzzles me. i have no idea what brought it on, or if what Angie said was what she meant, but its complete randomness made my day. I was standing by the doorway to Becky's office waiting for her to finish something she was doing so i could ask her a question. Angie was sitting in the office as well, and for some reason , out of the blue she says "you're Beautiful." what? it threw me for a loop. i was wearing my work clothes, probably covered in flour with my hair scrunched up in a hair net. i didn't know her very well at the time, so imagine my feeling. i probably had a look on my face like something had just dropped on my head. in a way something was... if i remember right, i got so flustered that i forgot my question entirely and went back to what i was doing.
The week before the incident with my mother i went to Price to see a psychologist to re-evaluate my mental illness. Needless to say i wasn't feeling to happy about myself that day. We were going through the regular questions; how do you feel about this? what makes you feel that way? ect... and then he asked how i felt about myself. i answered truthfully, "I like myself, but i don't like my waist." He paused a moment then responded, "i can't see why you wouldn't, you're beautiful." and then we moved on. I didn't think much of it at the time, as it is usually a psychologists job to help you feel good about yourself, so it could be a less than honest opinion, but i would like to think that it was sincere.
The first time i remember being told i was beatiful and it actually meant more than a passing phrase was back in middle school. i had had a rough day and was heading back home on the school bus. My best friend at the time, Justin, was sitting on the seat next to me as usual, but i wasn't talking. someone, i don't remember who, had been making fun of me and i felt ugly. He asked what was wrong and after a long silence i told him. he looked me up and down then said, "i don't think you're ugly. You're one of the most beautiful girls i know." i blushed, and i don't think we talked the rest of the way home, in fact i don't think we ever mentioned the conversation again, but it stuck with me. and in a time of my life when i needed it most his words would come back like a hug, and it helped, to know that somewhere out there there was someone who thought i was beautiful.
